Either a great story to get immersed in or a dynamic multiplayer game I can experience with friends.

Honestly? The biggest motivation is the fear of the actual game not being available from illegal sources, much like with the Lords of The Fallen. If there is no reliable crack for a game, you obviously won't be able to play it, unless you buy it from a legit source. There are numerous other, smaller reasons too, but I feel like this one is one of the biggest.

If the trailers are good and the concept is good, then I'm hyped for it and want to buy it. If it's a FPS then I don't care about singleplayer, but it must have at least a good multiplayer. I only buy Tripple A games because I don't trust the makers of indie games

My primal motivation to purchase a game is to own it legally so I could use the official support if needed (and apply patches easily etc.). I'm purchasing games digitally if they are reasonably cheap. I'm only pay higher prices for physical copies that have some extras (e.g. collector's or limited editions).

The genre of the game plays a huge role, and then gameplay aspects.
