First the genre, gameplay and story... but must have a fair price.

I am motivated to purchase games with huge, immersive worlds and a genuinely challenging gameplay (or the modding community has already created mods that up the difficulty).
Graphics come in as a distant concern — I am, after all, a Dwarf Fortress player.
Games that are free-to-play but not pay-to-win are also a draw for me and I usually (eventually) end up dropping a few dollars towards the game, such as with MWO.

What motivates me to purchase a game is if the game has good multiplayer/co-op mode so I can enjoy it with my friends!

The story line, the company that makes the game and of course replayability.

Cool intro video, cool "toon" or even just something that seems different or unique. Also I'm a sucker for anything open world!

I look for playability. Meaning a game that I believe that I could play through more than once and not be bored the second time around.
