If the trailers are good and the concept is good, then I'm hyped for it and want to buy it. If it's a FPS then I don't care about singleplayer, but it must have at least a good multiplayer. I only buy Tripple A games because I don't trust the makers of indie games

My primal motivation to purchase a game is to own it legally so I could use the official support if needed (and apply patches easily etc.). I'm purchasing games digitally if they are reasonably cheap. I'm only pay higher prices for physical copies that have some extras (e.g. collector's or limited editions).

The genre of the game plays a huge role, and then gameplay aspects.

Mostly because of story. I like games with good story and gameplay.

First the genre, gameplay and story... but must have a fair price.

I am motivated to purchase games with huge, immersive worlds and a genuinely challenging gameplay (or the modding community has already created mods that up the difficulty).
Graphics come in as a distant concern — I am, after all, a Dwarf Fortress player.
Games that are free-to-play but not pay-to-win are also a draw for me and I usually (eventually) end up dropping a few dollars towards the game, such as with MWO.

What motivates me to purchase a game is if the game has good multiplayer/co-op mode so I can enjoy it with my friends!
