EETimes has just come out with a new statement saying that it heard from several C-level executives about the possibility of Intel acquiring AMD.

The US passed a law in the 70's stating that a monopoly would not be accepted, and told Intel there must always be a minimum of 2 opposing companies who could produce the same type of chip. Specifically the 8086 Transistor Chip - and subsequent generations.
Some people from Intel formed AMD under this new law and produced slightly inferior chips that they had to design from the ground up that were substantially different from Intel chips yet still met the standard.
AMD was born.

multiple times to have AMD shut down, by backroom tactics, lawsuits, overspending and other tactics deemed illegal by the US Courts. (See my previous posts about the lawsuits they lost and the millions they had to pay to AMD,
Including the annihilation of Cyrex, the takeover of Cirrus Logic CPU's etc).
Intel will never be allowed to buy AMD out under US Federal Law.
As for acquiring nVidia, legally they are in a position to do so as they are not the only graphics card manufacturer - but with rumors of Intel wanting to use AMD integrated graphics on some of their new CPU's, I also find this difficult to believe.

This would actually be kinda funny if it were even legal. AMD is after all an off shoot of Intel. It was started by people from Intel that wanted to go a different direction.

Intel’s net profit is more than all of the gross revenue AMD generates in a year. To battle the antitrust laws at a global scale for such a relatively small company makes no sense.

This will never happen! Not even sure if it would be legally possible, there should be some competitive legal issues regarding this.
Just imagine what would happen, only Intel would control pricing/technology sharing/everything. It would mean monopoly on one of the biggest markets and most progressive. It's not as easy as Cola buying Pepsi, it would be more like Apple buying Samsung, Huawei and following big companies (or the other way around since Samsung is larger, but Intel is closer to Apple from… See More
marketing side at least). You DON'T want Apple having all the power, no one does!

"Aside from AMD having much more to lose than gain from the acquisition, there are several regulatory and anti-trust hurdles to overcome if such a merger were to take place.
So, we’d say that Intel buying AMD is a fairly long shot at this point. Rather, this year seems likely to be one of the most interesting times for computing in a long time with the big three (Intel, AMD and Nvidia) really going at each other."

I could see Intel trying to buy out RTG though to get their GPU tech.
