To be honest... living in a country like mine with our standards, we don't usually buy games. But that doesn't mean that I haven't bought any.. I have bought dozens of games, mostly because of the availability to play without any problems. The online gaming with friends is also a huge factor for me. So the motivation for me is the availability to play games with my friend without any problems and have pure fun.

Graphics, story, and ROI. I'm a huge fan of games like Skyrim because I know I'll play them for a good long time and definitely get my money's worth. Robust mod kit is also a factor. Got both Skyrim and Witcher for the PC for that reason.

Good amount of game time for the price, no paid dlc unless it's at least 6 hours long, great looking world (swords, magic and castles), smooth gameplay and NO BUGS! Which seems to be the trend in many AAA games lately.

Do I like the series already or does it look like a fun time, usually solo but coop is fun too. A great deal helps make the decision quicker!

What motivates me? I purchase a game to be as entertained as possible and not bored!

My Friends are what motivates me to play a game, most of the time it is a competitive sport that we play, to see who can reach "x" level first or who can do the most in "x" amount of time sort of thing.

Requirements for purchasing a single player game:
~Longevity - 24+hours with first play through
~Great story - its a must for single player games
~Environment - makes me want to spend hours just exploring
~Replay value - still have lots to do after beating main objective
~Combat mechanics - prefer real-time combat
~Innovate and progressive game play - Game play has to be fun. I like it to add something that i haven't seen in other games. And I want the game play to develop as I progress through the game… See More
so it doesn't get boring or feel redundant.

For multiplier games like mortal combat or shooters:
Lots of people have to be playing it. Online Matchmaking has to be quick. Obviously good game play is a must. Story isn't that important to me; I really online buy these types of games for the online play.
And honestly, out of all the games listed I'm only interested in Witcher 3(1st) and Mortal Kombat(2nd).

Certain publishers are a no-brainer for buying a game. Recommendations from friends are also a good place to start, as well as reading reviews from other gamers who have played it.
