1. price
2. repeatability
3. online perks
that's my top 3 motivation in purchasing a game.

First it's the genre of the game, since I mostly like RPGs and games alike. Then comes the mehanics/engine of the game, and after that it's the youtube gameplay clips and reviews.

What motivates my purchase of games all depends on my personal taste of features. For example the reason I might purchase The Witcher 3 is for a compelling story. The reason I might go purchase a game like Mario Kart 8, a game which has no story, is to have a competitive couch game to play with friends. I could list many a thing on why'd I'd pick up certain games of different genres, but there are two things I look for above all else. The first is a score that fits the game, and the second probably… See More

most important thing to me is easy and intuitive controls. It could just be myself becoming an old dog and being unwilling to learn a scheme, but if I don't personally pick up on controls within a set amount of time for a game it goes in the backlog. I can not stress enough how much controls mean to me.

Several factors:
1. Graphics. I love eye candy.
2. If I beta tested it, I may decide on its value as if it had no bugs. Typically based on fun factor, ease of controls, and amount of content.
3. Reviews from many, many sources. More often from streamers and youtubers though who would just lay it all out and tell you what they really think. Seems like popular sites like IGN and pcgamer have become extremely biased or just really really brief.

For me it depends on a number of factors. For a singleplayer focused game I care more about a good story, even if the controls are bad I will still usually purchase the game (though it may get delayed if the controls are really bad) and try to play it for myself so I can experience the story. If a game is focused on multiplayer than I care about how the community is (are they friendly and helpful or are they hostile and unhelpful), good controls, and good or interesting mechanics.

What motivates me, is when the game is actually something worth buying. Something I know is worth my money in term of gameplay, fun. Like The Witcher 2, I bought it because I liked the first Witcher game and so far it's a great purchase that I did.

A good story line intrigues me the most. Followed by game play. Games are more fun to me when I enjoy the actions I'm commanding my character to perform. The game has to run smooth too. Even though I love the visual effects in games, graphics aren't the more important as long as the game runs smoothly.

If a game is original made by developers (and publishers) who care about their communities, with creative art styles and a good story, I will definitely buy it.
