here is an idea.. If companies do not want to provide discs anymore, maybe give an option for people to download the installer and the ability to BURN it onto their own discs??? I mean with updates and such, not some base skeleton POS that requires the "day 1 patch"...

Digital gives them more control.
When you buy a digital game you don't buy the game you buy a licence to play that game.
There is no requirement for publishers to keep that licence active forever which means when said game is no longer profitable they can just remove it from there catalogue and render all licences invalid and there is nothing the consumer can do about it.

Nah, they want to save money and time on physical things, overprice the digital, and have you by the short and curlies by deleting a game when they like.

I can't see that working, from a piracy point of view.
But there should IMO, if a game has reached its final patched release, that a physical release be made for it at that point.
But with the intent to end physical releases, that isn't going to happen unfortunately.
