I am not so sure that detail is a good thing in an MMO, or really that many games.
There are going to be a lot of factors which significantly change how readily you can read the environment for things to react to, angle, lighting, terrain etc all limiting how visible a hazard, another player etc are going to be.
World of Warcraft was criticised a lot for its graphics, but the world remained readable for the most part.

a large degree read where the extent of it was, and outside of stealth, generally could see where players, or creatures were readily without you needing exactly the right camera player placement and camera angle, or time of day.
Seems to me, you will be playing against the environment more than anything else.
I think a lot of games are trying to look pretty over the function, where they not only don't need it, but it might even be a hinderance to playing.
