So true. Lately most of the knowledge being transmitted to our kids is just for teaching them stuff. I often miss the link to why that knowledge is important. History for example should teach them what can go wrong and how it can be prevented (thinking of the world wars, there were different but identifiable events that led to them). Same accounts to physics, biology, mathematics, arts... I think our kids would be better in learning Mathematics if they would at least be told what it is useful for.… See More
I often tell my kids that without maths there would be no PC, Smartphone, TV (or any modern tech) working and even simple things like buying stuff at a store. It all leans on mathematic principles for some part.
But it's hard to change the educational systems - so it is our part as parents trying to link all (or most of) that stuff to the real world. That being said, I admit its a tough job and I see a lot of parents failing to do this, for the worst I know some who simply do not care at all.
True enough. Knowing something, and understanding it are very different things. Too much education is about teaching a list of facts, most of which aren;t applied in the real world outside of that subject. Mathematics in particular is a subject which could teach so many skills to be used regularly, but instead gives us a lot that most of us will never have reason to use.

I like learning and books can be a good source of knowledge. Understanding is what you can potentially do with knowledge.
