RPGs is a genre that predates the days of video games being detailed, complex media; a genre that hearkens back to roots in P&P that required a group of players (or at least a couple).
While there are certainly lots of RPGs that offer a multiplayer mode, this is often little more than a combat system feature. Many of the best RPGs out there are solo experiences or there is little to no impact on the plot for having multiple players.
So, my question to you:
Is an RPG video game better suited to the… See More
single-player or multiplayer experience?
Wow, I really expected more responses toward the "social" side. I didn't expect it to be first in the poll, but it's surprising that a genre that has it's roots in social gameplay has so few respondents preferring it.
I feel that there is so much potential in social RPGs. Maybe publisher/studios just haven't found the right formula?

I enjoy both, but there are RPGs that are better solo and better with friends. I have to know the people in order to fully RP with them, otherwise it's a leap to extend the trust to someone else. That can be a lot of fun if you and the people you interact with can form a community of friends. Not so fun if it's just a gathering of people you don't know to well.. In those instances, Solo play is preferable. At least in my view.

I'm a solo player really, I don't have time to really schedule a social experience and really there isn't anything in the social RPG environment that screams "must play with people...". Of course I played WoW incorrectly, basically all quest and PVE, no raids, no PVP...

I like aspects of both.
I struggle with face to face interactions socially, and so online gaming offers me a huge opportunity to remove what is for me a huge barrier otherwise to social activity.
I like the idea of developing my own character, making my own decisions, but I understand the limitations of that when you have other players.

Definitely solo.

I'm pretty flexible when it comes to the format of my RPGs and number of players, be it single or more, is no exception.
Still, I have to say, lately I've been getting this feeling that something is missing when I play alone. I have decided that the thing I feel is missing is other people.
Now I'm not talking about MMO style game play. I'm talking about plot based games that are reactive to multiple players and their potential for cooperation or competition.
I really think that we need more games… See More
that at least give us option to play with other players and really role-play (different goals and all) within the plot.
So far, there haven't been that many examples of this kind of game. The most notable that I know of is Divinity: Original Sin 1 & 2.
I also have heard of "Eon Altar", a game I haven't played, but have thought is very interesting. It has a very unique format, using phones as controllers and "character sheets" for a coop game played on the computer.

I am always for solo RPG, because I like and sometimes can play for hours, and sometimes I can't wait for someone else to join. In many cases I like to enjoy solo gaming, where I can do things the way I like.
