If an effect is necessary, then breathing. Though there is appeal to using the colours for information as Rhys said. But I would prefer it via a more subtle option than a whole component if possible, if display on a screen for instance isn't practical. Otherwise static.
I have mine running with CPU temps - it starts off blue, goes pink at around 30C then red at 55C, then starts flashing red at 80C+ - since I went over to water cooling it's mostly blue/pink, red in gaming and yet to see it flash since i tightened the waterblock.
