I feel sharing my PC store experience from earlier today.
So I just wanna share my experience with a 2nd hand parts store in Gilmore (a place in Manila that somewhat resembles a small silicon valley) earlier today. I was buying an old Intel Q6600 processor. It was a new store, good selection of products, everything was going fine up until the point that they were gonna test the processor I was going to buy.
Why? Because I needed to replace a faulty CPU from a client’s old office PC.
First Test… See More
Scenario:
* This guy brought out a Foxconn LGA775 motherboard, a generic (no brand) power supply and an AMD A4 FM2 heatsink.
* He placed the heatsink on top, just letting it rest there. Mind you, a 95w processor vs a 45w heatsink, not to mention the heatsink was not properly seating on the processor IHS since the right side of the processor is having some clearance issue with a choke on the board.
* After plugging everything he has in, he tried locating the PS ON pins on the front panel header. It took him a while before he found it. Then he turned it on.
* I was so dumbfounded at the time since THERE WAS NO MEMORY and MONITOR connected/plugged into it.
* As I pointed it out, we go to the 2nd test scenario
Second Test Scenario:
* He now has a monitor and plugged everything in. Still, No memory module inserted and the D-Sub cable was not connected to the motherboard.
* I didn’t wanna tell them what’s wrong because I don’t wanna offend anybody. But again, I pointed out to not having a memory module.
* After they got a memory, the guy was trying to insert a DDR3 module into a DDR2 memory slot.
* They all got confused and must have switched around with 3 other bare motherboards and 2 pre-built systems. But nothing was booting up.
* They swapped around monitors too and power supplies but no luck.
Third Test Scenario:
* A new guy takes over. Still doing all the amazing things like the first one only this time he did something I’ve never seen in my life. For 3 times, he tried booting the bare system without any heatsink or cooler. He would then touch it with his finger to check if the processor was getting warm or hot. After another bout with several boards, power supplies and monitor, finally got a POST.
So for 45 minutes I was like, waiting and chatting with my German friend, telling her everything as it happens and she kept laughing. In the end. I got the allegedly working Q6600 processor wrapped in 2 layers of tissue.
This looks like a new shop with a great selection of products but they definitely need to hire some new techs, preferably with actual experience.
Been in the same situation, but in an electronics components store (you might have heard of e-Gizmo in Manila). I was looking for a variable coil and when I asked someone from the store, she said they don't have them. I changed the name to variable inductors since the former must've sound unfamiliar but she says they're not selling it. I asked her, for the last time, if they have any inductors at all. Her reply: she finally admitted she doesn't know what an inductor is I ended up buying… See More
just wires and LED's...I don't mean to insult her but shops need to hire people who actually know what they're selling and what they're not.
