to be fair, I am a social gamer, so play what my friends have, if a really great game comes out I do try and get everyone on board.

Imagine you've been stuck with a laptop or even a Pentium II/III pc for a very long time. The first PC you got... Then you buy a PC that can handle every game so far on the market... The feeling to even know to play anything makes you so confused that you dont even know where to start. If I had a way to choose what game I would play, then I would let other choose that for me instead. Will you choose that for me?

Challenge and/or innovation is the first thing i look for when i look at a new game to purchase. Also gameplay mechanics, which is very important imo.

A game has to be challenging, original and replayable (single player), or have a fun multiplayer. Eyecandy doesn't hurt either.

The biggest motivation for me to buy a game is the gameplay.
Second, if it's a part of a franchise I found really enjoying.
Third, if it's a multiplayer game, or has a really good multiplayer, i'd get it to play it with friends.
Fourth, to test if my PC will run it

Buying a game is an investment in and of itself.
From your game you want a great gameplay experience, be it single player or multiplayer, and good replayability factor.

From my point of view, I'm more tempted to buy games if:
1) I am genuinely interested in their content by what I've seen in trailers/read in reviews/heard from other people
2) I'll buy a game if my friends decide to buy it so we can play it together. I really enjoy the social aspect of gaming, my whole group of friends are a bunch of… See More

gamers themselves, so....
3) The game is made by a company that I know can be trusted to make quality content.
4) Will my PC be able to run it? Having a 3+-year old PC means that I can't really run most of the newest games on high settings. That means that I'll wait for an upgrade before considering buying the game, so as to have the best possible experience from it.
5) If it's part of a franchise/series I really enjoy playing. You know, to complete the set.
