Games/gaming in general motivate me. It can be a AA game and or and Indie game, if one's heart and soul is put into making a game, that is motivation enough to get it.

If it's a type that I will enjoy playing multiple times. Even after years has passed and you're on a new OS. The captivating content, no DRM, good reasonable price, compatibility updates, and other goodness sure as free ports, etc.
I still seek a PC port of Secret Of Mana or a genre of the like that has an interesting immersive storystory and beautiful artwork

My motivation is that if I want the company to make more games they'll need to earn money and rep from the games I play.

Art, Story and gameplay. I love engrossing myself into the worlds that are crafted, and seeing 50+ people work to make one world happen in the best possible way they can make it. Companies like CDPR, back when, on their first E3 they had a single table and computer to showcase their dream.

The price (deals, bundles are my best friends) and the overall quality. TotalBiscuit is the person to look for if you want to make your mind about the quality of the game.

Mainly story but it also has to have good mechanics. I love the Avatar (Last Airbender/Legend of Korra) cartoons so I bought the most recent game purely because I love the idea of bending the elements. So mechanics of that tempted me to purchase that   But for Dragon Age, I knew they had great stories that are very in-depth, so bought 2 and 3 after.
