For me, there are two main motivations.
1st of all is the entertainment purpose, I buy games that I have the expectations of bringing me huge amounts of fun (which depends of the genre, I don't expect massive amounts of senseless shallow slaughter in a RPG).
2nd to support the studio that developed the game to (hopefully) help them keep making good games.

I buy a game if it's worth buying it. For example GTA V or the Witcher 3. Those games have great gameplay. The only thing is, the price has to be right.

If friends buy it and it has coop/multiplayer and they want to play it with me. Then thats 75% the other 25% whether or not the trailer/gameplay vid shows something interesting. Or I loved a game that I buy its follow up, usually with regret.

My motivation is to experince a game and the work that the developer's put in. Find easter eggs and get the satisfaction that i completed something.

The main motivation is my history with that game... Started buying games when decided to take seriously playing Counter Strike. Since then, everytime I really get into a game, I try to find the way to buy it. The second thing is of course money, not always one has the opportunity to buy your favourite game, or the game you'd like, still, you'll try your best to get the money.

What motivates me is the need to experience a good story. Graphics hardly interest me, but If the story is compelling enough, I'll look past everything else and go for it. I believe that's what's behind the whole appeal of games, that you experience a story rather than watch, read or listen to it.

the three things that most influence my purchase of a game is 1) is it a franchise I already like EX. saints row, far cry, MAD MAX 2) are their any good trailers, 3) launch price of game, like with blood dragon or gat out of hell.
