It's been many years since I played Life is Strange, and the other day I finally decided to play Life is Strange 2. (I did play the free short game set before LiS2 called The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, which you should play before you start 2.)
LiS 2 started off pretty slow compared to the first game (apart from being in the same universe, it only plays homage to a couple of characters and places from the original game) and after about 1 and half episodes (there are 5) I was going to delete… See More
it, but I carried on. I'm glad I did because it suddenly got much better, with a few cool and interesting characters even though there were a many who didn't add much to the story.
I felt it never quite had the emotional impact of the first game and no real game mechanics to match either. Some parts felt a little gimmicky, without any real substance but at least I finished the story and don't have to wonder about the two brothers.
Once I finished it I realised I had never played the prequel to LiS, called LiS: Before the Storm. It's 9 years old now and I thought it would show it's age. (I started it last night and today I just couldn't stop until I finished it.)
Boy was I wrong about it showing it's age. I'd say it's the best one out of the ones I've played so far!
The writing was perfect and so very emotional. Be ready to keep hankies next to you when you play it. The fact that one of the main characters is from the first game and you know what the future has in store for them adds so much weight to everything they are and everything they do.
I've played a lot of story-based games, but I am hard pressed to think of one that hit me as hard as this one (maybe the ending of Dear Esther, but that's more of a walking simulator). It only has three episodes, but there is also a short bonus episode set before this one and man does that kick you while you are down.
The writing is spot on and the voice acting is powerful and so very believable.
Trust me about the hankies though...
Next on my list is Life is Strage: True Colours. Not sure it'll be as good as Before the Storm, but I'll give it a go.
For now though, it's bed time. I'm an emotional wreck and need to shut my brain off for the night.
oodnight everyone.

Good night Allan
