It's amazing what the Epson printer can do when it doesn't have the companies own extra garbage getting in the way of color accuracy lol
Basically I printed from GIMP to the printer in Linux. On windows there had always been a slight color shift towards a cooler temp I would have to adjust for from their software. That issue doesn't seem apparent here.

So from what I remember, the biggest difference is that Linux basically uses one color space for everything, usually determined by the monitor. This also includes printing. Windows on the other hand, lets devices use their own color space, mainly because devices are so varied across the industry, it is rather difficult for them to enforce one color space for everything. The other side of that too is drivers, if you're using open source then it's baked right into the kernel and much easier for color… See More
spaces to match up across devices, where as with windows you're dealing with proprietary drivers and software, for the most part so it's bound to have color accuracy issues.

Perhaps the drivers are by design trying to upsell you on a more expensive printer and ink combination for better quality photos.
Artificial product segmentation.
