Once, I was in Las Vegas on vacation and I sent him an email saying that I'd really like to check out Zappos. The way he ran the company was fascinating.

Which seems crazy, but was a super effective way of weeding out people who didn't love their job.
Also, pay was based on how many skills you had been trained for. Not what position you held. Every time you learned a new skill, you got a raise. Working your way up was just learning how to do every job in the company so that anyone could just choose to do what they enjoyed most.
After my tour, we went to Tony's apartment where I got to meet him and have a brief conversation. It was an extremely modest place. The guy was worth hundreds of millions of dollars he could have lived in a huge mansion and surrounded himself with useless things. But instead he valued people and experiences and was willing to take time out of his day to chat with a random person in his home just because I asked.
RIP Tony
