Installed OpenWrt on my Tp-Link router. It's pretty fun, but also hard to configure. This is my first time using open source firmware, so do you guys have any advice/tips&tricks to get the most out of it?
Will soon be installing the same on my new Netgear router, it has way more ROM to work with.
I can't say much for OpenWRT since its been years since I touched it (and in the end, preferred Tomato over OpenWRT at the time), but I will say definitely do your research. I use Merlin Firmware for my Asus routers as its just mainly an enhancement to what exists on Asus routers which I consider fine as is, but with the added elements of the helpful AMTM to install things like an adblocker by router without needing Pihole, enhanced firewall (that has actually stopped an intrusion via a game once),… See More
and enhanced wifi, but also added elements to still early use of DNSSEC and forced DNS-over-TLS. But that is my needs. Yours could vary very much so and have a few things you may need to configure manually such as making sure you have consistent stable connection when gaming (misconfigurations can cause drops in consistent established connections).
If you have alot of devices, I encourage you to look into organized IP Filtering and perhaps if it can support it and you can handle the configurations, VLAN segments.
