I had a HP that needed a new video card and I needed to upgrade the power supply. The case was too small for a standard psu so I cut out the back and velcroed it in to keep it from falling out.
I had a friend in the 90's who's IBM XT power supply died, and someone gave him an IBM AT power supply that was bigger, so he just cut a hole in his case to make it fit. He also painted the whole thing blue and put a Dodger sticker on it. Strangely enough, about 12 years later I saw that exact same machine in someone else's house.
Necessity of course being the mother of inventions, I must say this is for sure a "hard core mod." This mod necessitated a bit more than regular forward thinking, to say the least!
