I am having a hell of a time trying to keep respectable temps in my diy desk pc case. I may need to reconfigure component layout to include more fans. I can’t continue building the desk if I can’t get good temps.

This actually doesn't surprise me since you are making the case out of wood.
Wood is more of a thermal insulator than it is a thermal conductor so it's holding the heat in.
Metal cases act as giant heat sinks losing heat through the panels as well as through fans.
A wood case relies solely on fans moving air to remove heat, you are going to need some serious airflow through a wooden case to properly control temps.
