I won't lie... I have thought about posting this. But I feel that this honestly brings up a LOT of questionable behavior that needs to be discussed one way or the other as it could easily affect how eSports participates will be treated especially if they are a female, gender fluid, or simply wants some privacy.

esports team thought it had signed a fast-rising, highly ranked female player who played under the nickname of Ellie. As the news of the signing reverberated around the Internet, Ellie shared screen captures of threats from online attackers and less than two weeks later, Overwatch Contenders team Second Wind tweeted that she left the team, “due to some unforeseen reactions.” The circumstances only grew more mysterious from there."

Many assumed I was a guy when I played ffxi. I didn't care. I deliberately picked a neutral name. Shoot, I almost even played a Galka when I initially made my character (not knowing they were pretty much considered male and not sexless like the description said). I have very thick online skin and can dish it right back (and enjoy doing so). The only time I was ever annoyed with guys playing girl characters was when they were being very obvious and preying on other guys to take advantage of them.… See More
Loads pick girl chars just because they like the look of the character. If they take it a step further and want to play-act a girl? Fine - whatever. Who cares. They want to play-act a girl to "get stuff" - then I roll my eyes and think "seriously, how do guys fall for this stuff". If they dare to touch one of my friends though with that in mind, the mama-bear me comes out in full force. In this case I think it's just kinda either sleazy or deliberately misleading on the part of the team if they knew and didn't reveal. Pretending to be a girl to get that extra attention (thus "get stuff") that comes with being a female gamer (usually unwanted - though there are definitely plenty of girls out there that sadly want that attention) is just..... grrr. (just remembered that while I was playing fallout 76 right before it came out, I was exploring and 2 guys thought it was hilarious to just take shots at me while I ignored them. Whatever - didn't care since it wasn't doing anything to me. Eventually I said something snarky and immediately got the "Whoah! It's a girl!" thing and they instantly stopped and pulled a different attitude. Like I said - unwanted attention.)
