I buy several components at a time any given day. for upgrading one rig and the others get used parts from that machine, I go thru 3 upgrades a year...
So far it has been one component at at time, because of failures or a consistent standard that allows swapping something out, and still gaining. Mechanical drives and SSDs both functioning on SATA II for instance.
Though my PC has reached the point where upgrades for performance are severely limited both in variety and gain due to an old platform. So, my next upgrade will have to be 3 components, CPU, Motherboard and RAM.
And buying those together can get a discount that I can't afford to ignore.
These are the (High end) components I used

I buy everything at once, then start upgrading after tests.
